Phoenix is located in a good area for transport around London. Staff were very helpful and friendly. The building is a bit tatty and worn-out. Cleanliness is good. Overall, not a bad place to stay for a few days, if the price is right!

Mouldy walls”
The bedroom had evidence of a damp problem, with bubbling plaster on the walls and significant mould on them near the beds. I was concerned for my health. The bed creaked.

Horrible facilities ”
Supposedly there are two bathrooms for shower. However, one of them can’t be locked that there is only one left. The shower water in the bathroom is extremely hot and I can’t shower with it. I’ve got a few bug bites after sleeping for a night. There is no bug screen for the window that bugs often fly around.

+ Nice staff - toilet+shower room on 3rd floor is dirty. No place for toilet paper roll (facility issue) so some paper would just put it on the floor. - no lift and narrow stairs. not ideal for carrying large suitcase up and down (Note. they gave me a dorm room instead of a single room but no one is going to share it. This should be because of COVID but adjust your expectation accordingly)

Woken up by staff after midnight”
When I checked in after 5pm I was told that the rooms have not been cleaned yet and I had to wait. Male staff kept putting light on and coming into female only room after midnight, one of the men in hoodie walking around the beds. They were checking which bed was free and it happened not just one night. An other night after 8pm a man came in for 3 sec with a cloth just to wipe off one of the tall locker’s top part for no apparent reason, knocking someone’s knickers off the bedrail, he looked at it and left. He came back again to look at the beds later that night, walking around when we were in bed. Thank goodness I was not alone or getting changed when these men blasted the light on and stormed in late at night. At 12:30am it really was painful, especially when two men came in after each other with a ten minute difference also talking to us after waking us all up. Had hardly any sleep. This hostel is NOT for sleeping.

Everything a backpacker needs”
So the Phoenix Hostel was quite alright. I stayed there for three nights and have to say that I was satisfied with it. The location is a little far from the center (around 1 hour on foot - I like to walk). A big advantage is the fact, that there is a Tesco right down the street. Also, the sheets were clean and the people staying there were friendly, staff included. I only wouldn't recommend the 14-people room, since it's a little crowded and there's always someone snoring... But that's not the hostel's fault. Last thing, there are lockers available, which is pretty nice. All in all, I'd recommend it to a backpacker who only needs a bed to sleep in after a long day and might want to enjoy a beer at the bar, for business travellers I wouldn't recommend it, since it's more of a young, relaxed atmosphere

Pros: 3 tube stations within 8 minutes on foot, a Tesco and a Sainsbury with 5 minutes on foot, provides a kettle, tap water, fridge, powerful microwave oven and cutlery to cook your own dishes, the common area is inside a pub with couches, chairs and tables, very warm and comfortable, fast internet connection Cons: not enough space in rooms lockers, no burners for cooking pasta, no hooks/hangers in room
