Location of hotel was fantastic - just behind the lanes & across from the beach. Hotel car park was completely full for all 4 days, so keep this in mind. Receptionist told us to park in Orange car park, although a 20 min walk away it did save us almost £60 in parking (thank you!). The experience went downhill when we added an extra night on in a double room (we had been upgraded to a sea-view when we arrived which was lovely!), but when we went to check out of the first room we were informed that we would be staying in the same room (again, lovely but at tad inconvenient as we had just packed up). I requested for the room to be cleaned as we had already stayed for a few nights. When we got back later the bed was made, however they had not changed the sheets or the towels (which had been damp in the bathtub when we left), and had not given us any more toilet paper (we were down to 1/4 of a roll). Furthermore, at 2am we were awoken by the door rattling & a sheet of paper being slide into our room. It was a notice of a fire alarm drill the next day - but that gave us a huge fright at first! 2am was probably not the best time to have put them in people’s rooms! Although we were happy overall with our experience, these small things did contribute to our stay being only sub-par. I don’t think this would happen again, if not for us adding an extra night, and I doubt they also have weekly fire drills, so I think I would stay again in future.
Dear Katie, Thank you for providing us with your valuable feedback. I am delighted to hear you enjoyed your stay at The Old Ship. The team and I take great pride in the service and hospitality we give, although, I am truly sorry to hear that not everything was up to our full standards during your stay with us. On behalf of the entire team, I would like to apologise for not exceeding your full expectations. Please be assured that I have noted your comments and will be ensuring they are addressed by the relevant departments as quickly as possible. I can certainly assure you that at The Old Ship Hotel we do our upmost to get problems resolved to ensure that future guests do not have to experience the same issues. We hope you keep in contact with us so we may be able to improve your next stay with us. Kind regards Nick Bagshaw Duty Manager
We had an unfortunate stay at this hotel. The mattress was terrible, clearly very old, and in dire need of replacement. I personally woke up with some severe neck pain after a very poor night's sleep. After waking up so many times in the night, we decided to leave early at 8am this morning. Although a tower fan was provided, there was no air conditioning, making the room stifling and rather uncomfortable in the evening which I think was in part due to a towel row left on full blast in the bathroom. In the morning, we found what appeared to be a swarm of drain flies by the window in the bathroom. The floors were creaking and generally worn out albeit added some charm and to be expected given age of building. The walls however were paper-thin, and I couldn't find any coffee or tea-making facilities. Overall, it was a disappointing experience, though the staff and location were commendable. The presence of a noisy stag group along with points above, suggests to me it might be more suited for such guests. The hotel itself is in need of a refurb and our room even had cracked electrical sockets which is a major safety risk in itself.
I am sorry to hear that your bedroom was not the standard you expected. We pride ourselves on keeping our traditional building in good maintenance order as much as we are able. Still, the high traffic in our 154 rooms does often mean waiting our turn for updating certain areas. For that reason, we have cleaning and maintenance staff on well into the evening and a manager on site 24hrs a day so they can address any immediate issues our guests report. Please be assured that I have noted your comments and will be ensuring they are addressed by the maintenance team as quickly as possible. All I hope is that this will not deter you from visiting us again. Kind Regards Jason Bramwell General Manager
I love the Old Ship and have stayed many times. The plumbing is awful, the electricity may or may not work, the lifts probably won't, the rooms may be musty, the decor has seen better days, floorboards creak, windows rattle, wifi is hit or miss, and you will get lost trying to navigate the gothic maze of corridors linking the older, older, and ancient buildings it is made of. None of that matters because this hotel has character oozing out of every crack in the walls and leaky tap. Staff are always wonderful, views (if you have a seafront facing room) are glorious, and the location is superb (if sometimes noisy). The breakfasts are worth paying for. It's an experience not to be missed and I keep coming back for more. I love every threadbare sofa. Just don't expect a modern, efficient, clean machine of a hotel because you will be very disappointed.
I was thrilled to read your lovely comments about my team, and I know they will be very pleased to read them. Good service and hospitality are at the heart of what we do at the Old Ship so, as General Manager, it feels me with enormous pride to know we are getting it right. I hope we have the pleasure in welcoming you back very soon. Kind Regards Jason Bramwell General Manager
We booked this hotel in Brighton for 4 main reasons. 1, Location. 2, Car parking facilities, 3, A 4 star hotel and 4, cost. Things did not start well when we arrived when reception told us the car park is full and we will need to use a public car park. This cost £45 for 24 hours so it ended up a £90 car parking fee. Location is brilliant, right on the sea front by the pier. 4 star hotel, I don't think so, the carpets are filthy, with horrible stains especially in the lift. The hallway to our room is damp with plaster falling off the walls which was also being trodden into the carpet buy the guests for the 2 days we stayed. Cost was ok but when you consider the car park fees and an extra £60 for breakfast, I could have stayed at a more modern hotel with free parking for cheaper
Dear Richard, Thank you for taking the time to leave your feedback following your recent stay with us. We apologise for any inconvenience you experienced and want to assure you that we are taking your concerns seriously. We’re working to resolve the issue as quickly as possible. We take the cleanliness of our hotel very seriously, and we’re sorry that we didn’t meet your expectations. We have raised the issue with the relevant cleaning staff. Regarding our car park all websites that we feature on state we have limited parking based on a first come first serve policy. Please accept my apologies for this inconvenience though. Plans have been approved by Brighton City Council & various historical trusts for The Old Ship Hotel to undergo a major renovation (full details & dates to be confirmed). I sincerely apologise and hope you keep in contact with us so we may be able to improve on your next stay with us. Kind regards Nick Bagshaw Duty Manager

A bit tired”
An iconic hotel along the seafront, albeit one in need of updating. We got an exceptional deal which is why we chose the hotel, and of course the location is perfect. However, much of the hotel is tired and in need of refurbishment. That said, everything was clean and the staff were excellent. Breakfast buffet average.
Dear Lee, Thank you for choosing The Old Ship Hotel. We’re glad to hear that you were satisfied with your experience. I can confirm that we have plans for a full refurbishment of the hotel. A new design has already been created. Although investment has been lacking in recent years, we are anticipating improvements to begin later this year. We are working hard to ensure the improvements are made as soon as possible. We would be delighted to welcome you back in the future to hopefully note the improvements we are making. Kind regards Nick Bagshaw Duty Manager
