“Excellent hotel with some quirks”
If you are looking for a secluded place to chill in Puerto Galera, Sunset hotel is the destination. It was recommended almost unanimously by our friends and family and I can see why. When to travel : We went to the hotel on a regular weekend ( not a long weekend) and were lucky that it was scarcely occupied. In fact, most visitors on the island seem to have gone back on Sunday, and we had plenty of peace during our trip. From the glimpse of the crowd that we got on Saturday though, I can certainly imagine losing my mind if I go there on a popular holiday. The Good: The hotel is laid back and clean. The beach is right next to the property like an extension to your balcony. I’ll say the beach is a 7/10 which is superb to have right next to your hotel. The hotel is on both sides of the road though, so make sure you are getting the room on the correct side of the road. The service is excellent, the staff is friendly and at par with the superb hospitality standards of this country. We loved the way in which the staff seems to appear when you most need them and then disappear back leaving you in your private world. The not so good: Given the pricing of the hotel, we had more expectation from the breakfast. They simply have one item in the breakfast menu which is served the included option. It obviously is set up to encourage one to go for other better options which defeats the whole purpose. Other than the breakfast inclusion, the food was good, and was definitely prepared fresh when ordered, which we appreciated a lot. The billiards table/game room, although functional, was dirty and forgotten, it was as if they did not expect anyone to use it. Overall, I highly recommend the hotel to anyone going to Puerto Galera. Even with its quirks the hotel is worth it.
