Inexpensive rooms, Centrally located”
sparkling hotel is essentially a budget backpacker hotel. i booked for a deluxe room, probably the best of the lot. the room was more than spacious with huge windows fronting the street and a shower room (for bowel movements and the like, there is a common toilet outside). the shower stall has a movable sliding door that occasionally comes off the rim so don't lift too high or you might end up with a transparent shower door falling on you. the bed is ok, nothing to brag about but adequate for a comfortable sleep. though the room is clean, the corners of the bathroom are mildewy and dark. the staff expects you to take your room key with you thus everytime i claim mine, the staff keeps asking if i was gonna check out even at 7 in the evening! take those keys with you, period! though they offer very cheap food at the dining area (it isn't free), you're better off finding a restaurant nearby since the hotel is very central. there are malls nearby, including a mcdonald's 5 minutes away at plaza surabaya. the hotel has a free internet service - one desktop that's mostly used by someone at anytime. i check my mails at 5:30 am surabaya isn't really a lovely place for backpackers. it has limited sights and the city isn't conducive to walking since crossing the street is always death defying! the locals tend to drive like there's no tomorrow, it's in fact safer to cross the streets of vietnam than here. i would miss surabaya if i could, but for those who has to, and with a limited budget, sparkling is perfect. also, i strongly advise you against plane rides in juanda international. very unfriendly security personnel, very intrusive. during my arrival, i didn't see any caucasian. backpackers stay away for a reason.

Excellent location, quiet, spacious & clean room”
One of the few budget accommodations in town and located opposite the Surabaya Plaza with all the coffee and food shops, supermarkets and clothing stores. It's within walking distance from Gubeng Station(5-10 minutes walk), from where you can take the train to Yogya and probably a lot of other places. For just 105.000 IDR you've got an airconned and quiet spacious room(including tv)with a common bathroom, and free use of towels and one (common) computer with internet and free wifi. No disturbance from any renovation during my stay by the way. New mattresses wouldn't be a bad idea though, you can feel all the springs.

basic backpacker hotel in great location”
sparkling backpacker is what it says: a backpacker's place. the rooms are basic, partly without windows, but with ac and tele (i stayed in one of the deluxe rooms who are slightly more expensive, but worth it). the place is 5min walking from surabaya train station and close by a nice mall and square. if you happen to have the idea (like me) to pick a cab to quickly visit the surabaya old town district (with the mosque etc.), count 30min drive. it's bigger than it looks.

Great Hotel 1 block from shopping mall”
my room had everything that i needed, a bed, i was able to control my own ac and it worked, and wifi in my own room which is rare, i would recommend this hotel to any of my friends!!! location is in central surabaya so it was very easy to get around town without spending a lot of money.

Good Location”
This backpackers hotel is quite easy to find. Very close to Plaza Surabaya and just opposite the RS (which is abbreviation for Rumah Sakit in Indonesia Language or Hospital) Mukti Murni. But unfortunately, during my stay, the next door is under construction. So noisy in the morning. And as the second night, it last until 10.00pm! OMG. I am so tired and sleepy after a day activities and just wanna have rest. I told the receptionist and they said I am not the first person to mention about it. But they take no action. As for me, I think they should go and talk to the next door owner since it is already night time and they are operating a hotel business. Their guests need to rest at that time. Apart of that, I am very happy to stay there. Easy to ge everywhere. As I mentioned earlier, Plaza Surabaya is just few minutes walk (go there if u really bored and nothing to do), the 24 hours shop, Circle K is just nearby and as for me a Muslim, there is a hawker in front of it which sell Nasi Padang. The room amenities is quite good for a backpackers' hotel. For a VIP Room, the provide towels, soaps, mineral waters, water heater and hot and cold shower (just my tap water smells sulfurous, but I don't mind about it since I always travel throughout Indonesia and most of the tap water smells like that). Uppsss... one more thing, the allow us to use the internet for free. That was good.

Partly Sparkling”
Only there one night and had little time, but did manage to walk along the river where I located the Loving Hut vegetarian restaurant for a fantastic meal. Up early for train to Banyuwangi next morning so left before breakfast was served. My room was nice, with TV, but the bathroom down the hall was far from "sparkling" and with no toilet paper. Bring your own. For the price, it was a fine place to spend a night. If you are going to be taking the train towards Bali, be mindful there are TWO Gubeng stations. The EASY one to get to is not the one, unfortunately, and the newer one to buy tickets and to board the Banyuwangi/Bali train is not connected by tunnel or bridge, so case it out the day before as you will have to do a longer walk to loop around to the newer station. Might want to use a taxi, not because it's far but confusing.

Budget hotel at great location”
We booked the VIP room since want to have own bathroom and not share. The bathroom is not very but moderately clean, imagine how it would be if a shared bathroom. Anyway, the room is cozy, clean with basic necessity, U nee dto brong own soap and shampoo though, Right behind it, across road is one of the large mall, adjecent to it is the Submarine monument, as well as food stalls. U can easily catch low cost transport to take u to almost any major location at surabaya from here.

The hotel has great location of the Surabaya, it's very near from the railway station and travel information center, you can find shopping mall around it very easy. But it's not very clean for the sheet. Value for the money.

Unbelievable Price”
This is the lowest rate hotel I've ever stayed in. The location is in downtown of Surabaya. With such price, you will get a decent bed (I just slept like nothing is going to happen). There is a shower in the bedroom but lavatory is on another floor below. You'll get simple breakfast served for all guests in the morning. For this price, there's nothing to complain about.

Good location, near to Plaza Surabaya”
Don't expect much in term of cleanliness and extra comfortability as this is a typical backpacker's hotel. However, the location is really good as it is near to Plaza Surabaya where you can dine, shop and enjoy yourself with its cinema and mini themed-park. Breakfast can be improved as well as the unit's condition. The next door is undergoing renovation, so a bit noisy at night - day time no complaint as I were out all day.

Great location in the city centre and near to shop”
I booked 3 VIP rooms to accomodate 6 adults and 4 children between 3 to 10 year old. Very comfortable stay with simple breakfast comprises of fried rice, bread, coffee and tea. The staff are helpful and always ready to help if needed. They help me to arrange two Toyota Kijang for trip to Malang and Batu the next day. Very nice budget hotel within the city centre...

Weird hotel”
It was terrible stay in all my experience. I made a big mistake moving from more cheap and clean hotel to this one just because it situated closer to the place i need to visit every day. It was more expensive and dirty. Shower has smell like toilet went from drainage because people using their shower to pee instead going to toilet which is shared. No hot water, so u must be prepared to take shower with cold water. Being at bed u can feel all the springs in mattress by ur body and beddings was in terrible condition too. They said they currently under renovation, but even renovated rooms in terrible conditions. If u'll be "lucky" and get non-renovated room u'll receive real shock as me at my 1st night. They have TV in rooms but signal so bad, it's really hard to watch it. And in my case i got remote control from different tv which wasn't worked with my tv. Breakfast in hotel is very simple and better even don't try it. In the kitchen where cooking that food a lot of rats. And other guest tell me that they using expired ingredients for cooking. Anyway, location of hotel is good, Surabaya Plaza Mall is nearby and it provide free wifi which speed could be from 0 and up to 3mbps. But it's really a bit overpriced. You can find at Agoda cheaper hotels with more clean rooms and get more comfortable stay at all

If it's not we are going to catch the early morning train I will never stay there... the hotel around the corner(just one street away) with a little bit higher price turned out to be much much much better. Next time I will definitely NOT stay in Sparkling Backpacker.
