Questionable Service for a 5-star place”
I loved Nanzenji (an area in Kyoto), I’d return for sure. Loved the room. Loved the aesthetics, the experience, the food. Not the service. Possibly one of the most shocking one to me in a while — by *any* country’s standards, not just Japan. I’ll be back for other Ryokans around Nanzenji, just not at Yachiyo. Service is understandably backward too cus of existing infrastructure. Registration, reservations, keys, my meal timings were all handwritten on paper — all of which I didn’t mind & I loved how analog things were. The only inconvenience throughout my stay was that my shoes were kept at the front desk, so every time I left the ryokan, I had to ring the bell for someone to carry my shoes to me. Then I had to pass them my keys. It's a small inconvenience that doesn't bother me, but I'm leaving this info here for those who don't understand the culture and might affect their stay. The first full day at the ryokan, I really just wanted to nap and onsen and nap and onsen. Which I did. So I had to call up the reception to ask for no housekeeping (cus they didn’t have the DND signs for the doors). But cus it was so analog, I think communications between staff were an issue - so that day, I had at least 3-4 calls to the room from different folks to press for housekeeping. I was annoyed but not enough to bitch about. I had also instructed them to only do housekeeping after 1PM (hours are usually 10am-2pm, I didn’t wanna push too late but if I could I’d have asked for 3pm). Again, the same issue of constant rechecking with me from different staff. By this time I was used to it and thought nothing of it. Then came my birthday dinner that I had informed them to change the timing from 6PM to 7.30PM A DAY IN ADVANCE cus I wanted to soak in the onsen. At 5.50PM, the lady who’d come escort me to the restaurant, knocked on my door. In my Yukata, still dripping wet, (there’s no peeephole on the door either), I was confused, “isn’t dinner 7.30PM??” She left apologetically. On the day of checkout. Checkout time was 11AM. They called the room once at 10.53AM. I was really annoyed at this point. Cus I was packing my stuff. At 10.58AM, someone comes over to knock on my door. 🙂 I got REALLY ANNOYED. So I showed them my watch — it’s 10:58AM, isn’t checkout 11AM? I need to pack. When I finally made it out of the room at 11AM sharp, and at the reception at 11.03AM, there wasn’t any apology or whatsoever. Fine. I left my luggage behind. Went for breakfast. One last lap around Nanzenji before heading to my next hotel at Gion.* When I returned, they handed me my luggages (one heavy ass bag pack, one SUPER heavy luggage, and one light carry-on). While I carry my handbag. 🙂 As I’ve mentioned, it’s an old Machiya. It’s made of cobblestones and wooden steps. So I, had to single-handedly LUG ALL THESE, WHILE DRAGGING MY STUPID LUGGAGE AFTER DEPOSITING MY BAGS INTO THE CAB - nobody’s came to help. Not even to the cab. Not the receptionist. Not the one who carried my shoes throughout my stay. Not the one who took my dinner reservation. Nobody. Five Star Ryokan. ‘Nuff said.
Absolutely Stunning”
Our stay here in the 1F Suite was absolutely incredible. The room was very comfortable, the service was excellent, private bath was luxurious, and the grounds were stunning. Great food too.
Amazing stay in tradition Japanese style room”
Enjoyed my time at this hotel for its serene and relaxed atmosphere. Conveniently located near Keage station and close to a beautiful temple. Our room, quiet and clean, provided a peaceful retreat. Opted for a private bath in the evening after exploring, ensuring relaxation. The staff consistently maintained our room's neatness and comfort, displaying friendliness and warmth throughout.
Good”
Agoda only had options up to 3 people for a room which had a capacity of 4 in both the title and description. Reached out to Nanzenji for clarification and ending with: "Are we okay with bringing 4 people for this accommodation?" They responded with: "It can be used by 4 people." Great, seemed clear enough. We get there and they were confused as to why we had 4 people. We had to pay extra (~33000円) for the 4th person per night which was... inconvenient. Staff were great and friendly throughout the stay. The room itself was decent and accurate to the pictures we saw on the website. Not the cleanest but that's fine. The main reason why we chose this room was the bath. The only bathroom sink is in the same room as the tub. The shower is also in the same room and seemed to be an afterthought addition as there was barely room to comfortably shower. The bath itself was great. The only issue some people might have is that it gets emptied daily which means you have to share the same bath water. Pricy for what you get and I would recommend only if you haven't been to a ryokan. But I'm sure there are better ones out there.
Modern comfort meets traditional service ”
Modern updates with traditional ryokan style; convenient location near north Higashiyama sites; spacious room with beautiful garden view and private wooden bath. Near main road but quiet enough. We didn’t try the food because we wanted to experience Kyoto nightlife so I can’t speak for the food.
