This place is certainly a 5 star resort, but it's the subtle kind. There's nothing about the facilities, food, amenities, location, etc. that's gonna knock your socks off- they're all great, just not overly luxurious. Where Excellence El Carmen WILL knock your socks off is in the service/staff. I'd like to think I have a pretty well-defined perspective on this: in m...

I absolutely love the grand Bahia Principe Resorts. We originally booked at the Punta Cana side of the resort but found the amenities bleak and lackluster. food was subpar but the resort itself and hospitality were beautiful and welcoming. We upgraded to Ambar on our second day and didn’t turn back. My heart is really at the Esmeralda because even though Ambar is adult...

Have not been to this hotel since 2010 but nothing has changed in regards to resort look. Food & service were exceptional at all eating places. Bar staff could not do enough & were also exceptional and drinks were probably the best made I have had. I have been to Punta Cana 6 other times this year and stayed at other resorts rated in the top 10 and this was definitely ...

Pros- Staff at restaurants, bars, entertainment team, room service and housekeeping. Staff were amazing!! Anything we needed they were great. Remembered our names and orders daily. It was great. Servers barely make a few hundred dollars per month as minimum wage while working 10-15 hour days so please tip them well!! Or even take costume jewelry, toiletries, coloring b...

First time in the Dominican Republic for my daughters as a birthday gift. They had a nice experience. They had the Elegance Club Room, Staff in the entire resort was excellent. The rooms were nice and clean. The location, the beaches, the water were awesome. My only concern was the food, they were really disappointed. They will keep anyway a good memory of their sta...

Reynaldo went out of his way to make me and my boyfriend happy. We were celebrating his birthday and everything went amazingly!! Even when there was a little problem it was taken care of or made up for by something else!!! The servers and dancers are amazing!! This is a place that makes you feel welcomed and free on vacation. It is quiet and away from everything else b...

By far the best vacation I have ever been on. Let me tell you, this resort caters to your every need. It is so cool to have a Butler looking out for you the entire stay making sure you are experiencing the best of the resort. The rooms are immaculately clean and very spacious. We had a room with a beautiful view and also had a Jacuzzi on the porch/balcony. I will c...

This resort is advertised as a 5 star all inclusive experience with gourmet restaurants. Instead of the concierge curating your experience you have to stop by their office everyday to make dinner reservations for the best restaurants. They trick you and tell you they are full when in fact half of the restaurants are empty. Employees working in the resort use unnapropri...

The rooms could be a bit cleaner but it's made up for by the service. Definitely get the cheapest standard rate possible an expect to pay an additional $100/night to update to Diamon Club (which you should do). Everyone is so friendly, the food is ok (the steakhouse is the best). I'm mostly Vegan and had to let that go to have a real meal. Its a drink and be merry type...

I have stayed in this resort for 11 nights with my family,in the beginning I was very disappointed because of our room ,we booked 2 rooms and one room supposed to be arranged for our anniversary after sending few e-mails and been confirmed that our request been added to our reservation but guess what ? We have received the worst room from the resort (entrance door brok...

I stayed in the tropical view double room. Upon arrival, one of the beds had hair all over the sheets and pillow cases. Housekeeping came and put fresh linen on the beds. There were other occasions where they did not clean the room even after I called several times to request and put the cleaning sign on the door. The mini bar was not replenished daily. We both were ce...

Some staff are helpful, some not. All room concierge hard sell with titles like “welcome pack” etc. Check in staff originally good, then slow and delayed for now reason. Shop purchases was cancelled as item didn’t have a ticket. The diamond club, hideaway and normal splits are a ridiculous pointless exercise in futility and perceived importance. One nexus guy wa...

Beautiful beach with an abundance of drinks and food. Lots of activities Something for everyone Lock on the sliding door to the porch was broken. Called it in, received very prompt service Friendly staff Room floor was sandy on arrival Missing shower door, creating a messy bathroom. Attentive, welcoming and consierge level service. Staff knew our names after only two days and remembered our food allergies. Beach was clean and kept well. Spa was wonderful-relaxing oasis and we were able to use full spa facilities after our massages. Pools, grounds and buildings were pristine. Truly felt like we were in paradise. Anything we wanted we got, and th...

everything excellent except upon leaving the system is not good. We missed the shuttle ferry and we were standing at the top of the hill for the ferry with no direction from staff. I haven't checked out at a front desk for 20 years but this hotel said it is mandatory on the last day when i asked why the boat left without us. There should be a big sign in your room ...

Beautiful property but slippery especially in the rooms bc of ac and humidity. Got inaccurate information from staff about everything. Don’t book Coco Bongo there. Do it yourself. Village shops closed on Sunday by the way. Thx Westin. Food is terrible and served cold and room service is ridiculously expensive and the prices are not accurate in the menu. Room wasn’t cl...

The grounds, pool, and beach were beautiful. Staff was friendly and helpful. It seemed as though tipping was expected, which surprised us. The food was very good and there was variety. Not all restaurants were open as advertised. Activities were plentiful, but not always as scheduled. Overall our visit was wonderful and we would definitely return.

It was my first time in Dominican Republic but prior to going there I read several reviews. These reviews were very helpful helpful. Bahia Principe Esmeralda is a well kept property with staff who goes above and beyond to ensure you are comfortable. I got there the day before my birthday to celebrate alone but thanks to the wonderful staff I never felt alone. The room...

Had reservation at Grand Bahia Principe Bavaro. Waited 30 to 40 minutes to then be told we have no rooms but we will upgrade you to Amber Green . Then 30-40 minutes later they tell us we only have room for 6 of the 8 so 1 couple will have to go back to the other resort. We said no and argued a while and finally all got at the same resort. Then our room key didnt work (...
Cheap places to stay in Dominican Republic

It was y first time traveling solo, and the moment I arrived, I was happily greeted by my roommates. I stayed in a 12-bed mixed dormitory. There was a fan above every bed to make sleeping more comfortable and to keep mosquitoes away (still got bitten). The inner garden is just beautiful and a nice place to hang out during the hot days and dark nights. There is a small ...

This was a nice place and good value for money. It really had a nice welcoming and safe atmosphere. Francesca is fantastic and very very helpful, as is her husband. The room is basic (but you get what you pay for). I would stay here again for sure. One thing to note is the wifi sucks. Everything else was great.

Wonderful, everything is there plus it is close to the casino, hospital and church. The only thing to make my stay better is better WiFi service. The whole area of the resort should be ok with WiFi extenders. My two stays before this one both had access to WiFi in the rooms I was staying in, but now WiFi is limited to the reception area only. Other than that...

I was very dissappointed with the staff and the accomodations ! Booked a one bedroom apart. about one month in addvance, when i got there was none avail. The staff did not speak English as advertized on the site. The room that I did receive had numerous problems , Aircon leaked on the bed, Bathroom cieling leaked.I woul not reccommend the place to anyone.

The apartment and 3 others are situated within the grounds of the owners garden. The pool and gardens are lovely. The family helpful & friendly. We had a car which is almost a must as the property is a 5 min drive to the nearest beach or western style restaurants. There is an area in the garden where you can prepare food. It would be perfect if there was a fridge ...

I had only booked 1 night but i ended up staying 3 all together. The rooms are not very pretty and beds are a little too soft for my taste but the location on the hotel was great - walking distance to the sea, walking distance to the walking street and old/historic city. Bring a bottle of water with you in the room as they dont provide drinking water (there is a sh...

We had a one day layover in the DR and stayed at coco. The owner is very nice, staff was very helpful. We had transport arranged for us by the hotel (we had to pay) as our flight was arriving late I the evening. Breakfast was outstanding and reasonably priced (3-4 $USD). I would highly recommend this hotel for. A layover or any type of trip in Santo Domingo. 2 minut...

This was one of the cleanest hotel in the city of SDQ. Great location and a major value of your money. The clerk was very friendly and knowledgeable. The staff was great and courtesy. This is a must next visit to DR. Why pay all that money for a hotel room for a 4 hour a day sleep. One will be out in the city and the beach all day. Smart traveling. Thanks.

The hotel is located on the mainroad leading south a bit away from the center of Barahona, but Barahona is just a small town, so it is a 10 minutes walk. The rooms are simple with AC, ventilator and TV. Wifi in room was sometimes tricky, it works best in lobby and restaurant. Breakfast and dinner were in the price included. Some varieties are available.

We stayed in 2 bedroom apartment style hotel with kitchen. It was very convenient to use kitchen. This hotel is 3 min from center and beaches by car, so it's better to have your own car. Very friendly staff and family atmosphere. We enjoyed our stay in this hotel for 5 days with amazingly beautiful beaches. We'd like to stay in the same hotel in the future.

This was a perfect place to stay for a couple of nights. A two minute walk from the beach, bars & restaurants. I was disappointed by the “couldn’t be bothered” attitude of I imagine the owner who didn’t get up to help me open the gate whilst struggling with my bags, didn’t say hello or welcome me. He took my money & handed me a key without even a smile. A common occu...

For the money, this is a great deal. Central location is the best with easy walking to local beaches, clubs, businesses, etc. Plenty of great local restaurants, colmados, within a few minutes walk. 10 minute walk to a large supermarket. The staff is very helpful, efficient and friendly. Some of the furniture is dated and could use some updating, but overall for ...

I booked a room because it fit my budget. However, the hotel was excellent and the food was really, really good. The staff was friendly and attentive. If your vacation includes the beach, partying, sleeping late and breakfast...Las Palmeras is where you want to stay. Mark my words.

This hotel was actually a pleasant surprise. We planned to use it just as a rest place but discovered access to the roaring river Jimenoa and wished we had booked more days. Its a chic and antic medium- large size property. It definitely is between a 3 star and a 4 star hotel, as the rooms feel a bit older however, it really is cute and the best value for your money. I didn't have a lot expectation about the intercontenental Hotel in Santo Domingo due to my previuso experience in other Interconental hotels around the world. I have ato admit that the service and room standard was Ok. No super class but ok. The access to the city was quite easy by taxi ( 7 USD = 200 pesos). There are good restaurangs in the area to a very good price ...

really, this is a nice hotel. It is new, modern, the staff are so friendly and helpful. The bed - so cushy and comfy. There are two pools and a nice little restaurant. Also there are many restaurants close by and the fisherman's village is about a 10 minute walk. The wifi worked well. The beach right out front is not the best - especially once you've seen playa coson, ...

I was a bit disappointed with my room but did not complain because the Manager was courteous about allowing me to have early entry. The towels were worn and did not glisten white as in most hotels of this rating. I had a wheel chair room but the shower is terrible and water flooded and shower head not stable. I was using a walking cane. The price is high compared to wh...

We booked a quiet room but was allocated next to the main pool and where all the intertaintment was. The Co co cafaterie was nice until we saw a big rat running acros the room. In general service in the main restaurant and sea side grill was on high level., smiling and friendly.

It's a nice hotel. Their food is average, it would of been better if there were more Dominican good and the food hotter then warm/cold. I had a problem with the room- the AC wasn't working so they switched us TWICE. But overall it was okay, they need more activities. The beach was really dirty with seaweed but it's not the hotels fault so I can't blame them.

I enjoyed 4 days at Serena. It is an older style hotel but is very lovely. A good sized room with a nice balcony, I kept the doors open all night, looking out and hearing the ocean. Beach is small but larger city beach is very close. Hotel is down a small road, west of the town so the motorbike noise is minimal and so it is a very peaceful place. The pool and grou...

I was quite happy with my decision to stay in this place. I chose it because of its location that was close to the beach and town center; everything was within 5 minutes walking distance. At first I thought the room was too big for me. But I actually felt quite comfortable. I was in love with the arrangement and furniture inside. The room was very clean and looked v...

It's a really pretty hotel and the staff is great. Needs a bit of paint in a few places where it's flaking and blackout curtains if you want to sleep in late. The current curtains leave some light in the middle. Breakfast buffet is OK but could be better. No hot milk. No Expresso machine. Fruit juices are way too sweet. And that's about it as far as flaws go. Everyth...

Superior room was excellent, but beware if you’re in blocks 3 and 4 as you’ll be deafened by the evening entertainment which thoughtfully goes off at 11pm. Food was very varied throughout the day. Nice beach and the rooftop pool was excellent. Overall very good value for money and if you pre book a transfer from the airport through numerous online companies you can get...

The staff was very friendly and the location great. It was very quiet as it is set back from the main road. It is so much nicer than those huge resorts. They were very willing to help us arrange activities. They are very good if you speak French but they do not speak too much English. I would definitely stay there again.

Comfortable, clean apt.s close to restaurants, shops, mini market, bars/pubs, bank - main street (1-3 min.), beach (3 min., if buy a "piňa" or eat - sun bed free), airport - 20 min, usually can find everything what you looking for. Stuff friendly, helpful - speak Italian, Spanish, English and may be more. Fast free internet. We rent a car (local company), drive round B...

Important Issues: 1. Personal is very friendly, but just 1-2 speak English. (the rest just Spanish) 2. Apartments are not 2Beds Apartments, but just a house with everything in one room. 3. This hotel doesn’t accept credit cards, so you have to pay in hotel cash !!! (or PayPal, but you have to pay charge) Around the hotel is not possible to withdraw the money – but ...

The unit, a one-bedroom apartment on a second floor in my case, is really beautiful and in great general state and condition. The Italians who ran the place charged us an illegal (according to the central bank, the chief of police, and the office of the minister of tourism, all of whom I've talked to after getting back to the capital) exchange rate for Pesos to dollars. During this peak season, the island buzzes with tourists, making it a lively time to experience local festivities and events. However, if you prefer a quieter atmosphere and lower prices, consider visiting during the shoulder seasons of May to June and September to November. These months offer a fantastic balance of good weather and fewer crowds.
While the Dominican Republic enjoys a tropical climate, it’s essential to be aware of the occasional rain showers, particularly during the hurricane season from June to November. If you’re looking to avoid the rain, planning your trip for the dry season will enhance your experience.
