Oaxaca hotels & places to stay

Great location and the pool is a great amenity. Perfect for taking a break from city. We had 2 issues with the hotel. One, it claims to be smoke free and the guests below us smoked from 7am to 4am, leading to the second issue. The rooms are built around an inner “open” area which gives good light but you are looking face to face with neighbors. This creates a noise issue as well because of the cement build, the sounds (and smoke!) from any open window travels directly in to all rooms. I did call about the smoking and was told to close my windows and then the 2am call resulted in the staff making the smokers close their windows.

Located right in the center of Oaxaca city in an old colonial building, this place is loaded with atmosphere that has been augmented with a unique modern style of decor that makes it a fun place to stay. I was only there briefly (a short night pre-early morning flight) but enjoyed the friendliness of the staff, their ample communication with me prior to my arrival and their helpfulness in arranging my pre-dawn airport transfer. A highlight is the family style dining (breakfast - which I had to miss, and dinner). Good food, presented beautifully. Be aware there is no TV in the rooms. I didn't miss it at all but another guest was surprised (and unhappy). There are snacks and a mini-bar in the room at reasonable prices. Several other amenities are available which I didn't have time to take advantage of. Would return if I get back to Oaxaca in the future.

Quite good location and one hammock ends the list of pros. Hole in the wall to the next room so it seems like we are all together. The acoustics of the hotel makes street cacophony even worse. Kitchen can't be used, it's far from clean. Rooms are big but there is nothing in them. Bed, tiny table and your things all over the floor. No cleaning during a stay. We had to put our trash outside on the corridor so it won't stink in our room.

I loved EVERYTHING about this hotel. The location is perfect for the city, close to the centre but quiet. Amazing value, especially the breakfast. I often didn't eat until dinner as there was so much food. Cereal/fruit/yoghurt/coffee and a different hot dish every day. If you didn't like the dish on offer the ladies would happily make you something else. Owner delightful, very friendly and helpful. Lovely roof terrace. Rooms simple but comfortable and spotlessly clean. The best place I stayed in Mexico.

Within easy walking distance of all the sights and close to shops and restaurants, we spent 3 nights at this friendly, simple hotel. We had a small double room with en suite shower room on the upper floor looking down on the cental courtyard. The room was simply furnished and comfortable. The courtyard was a cool quiet place to sit and a basic breakfast of coffee and cake was available. Staff were friendly and helpful. Oaxaca is an interesting small city, rather more touristy than most, with a large number of US seniors using it as a winter base! Apart from that the atmosphere was genuinely Mexican and streetfood was available in many of the Plazas. Worth a visit to the nearby Maya temples. We walked from Oaxaca, but minibus tours are available.

I had great time and relax in this hostel Although it is a six-bed room, there are two showers and toilets, and it is large and clean. also, It is safe because there are lockers. I think it is a great satisfaction if you are Japanese(el todo mundo) and have used the hostel. I stayed at various hostels but I was satisfied with everything in this hostel. I will use it again! ! ! great recommendation!!!

this hotel is quite nicely furbished, 10 minutes walk to zocalo (main square), very good breakfast (not a hilton one, but compared to other in mexico it was yammy). staff does not speak a very good english, but they were very, very nice - they gave us a room already at 7 am and we could leave our luggage till 10 pm in the hotel. only disadvantage is the bath - it was very small and very uncomfortable, even showering was difficult, since the water was spreading all around (but not on you :) ). very nice rooftop terrace!

The hotel complex is a series of chalets and large rooms arranged around lush gardens and pleasant though deserted swimming pool. The complex I guess was built in the 70's ??? And that was probably it's heyday! It's very dated although that become quite charming in the end and we extended from 6 to 8 nights, it's like a motel that time forgot but the rooms are large, wifi connection good and the room maids did an amazing job Everyday... breakfast buffet is VAST but repetitive after a couple of goes, the restaurant is VERY meat orientated so as vegetarians we avoided it after the first night. Very quiet location but only ten minutes , direct and very pleasant walk into the city centre

the hotel itself feels very cozy when you arrive - the courtyard is serene and the rooms in the back of the property provide an added level of coziness and serenity. we happened to stay in a corner room (117) facing the street, and as such we weren't exactly afforded full privacy. no matter - the real issue w/ the room was the broken faucet in the bathtub, which happened to be located in the bedroom itself without any dividing doors or walls. if you're a couple or solo traveler, this would work quite nicely (except for the faucet). the bathroom was a separate room w/ a door, and was quite generously sized with 2 windows (facing the street, but w/ translucent glass). again, on first glance the design rather impresses - but w/ gradual use you find that a) the open shower overflows into the general area because the floor is rather level and doesn't allow the water to flow into the drain, b) the drain itself is not well designed (a traditional 4" drain but located UNDERNEATH two pieces of removable floor tiles), and c) the lighting in the bathrroom is insufficient due to placement and the use of LED pinlights (very much energy saving, but producing extremely low luminance), so you end up having to shave or do your makeup when natural light streams in through the windows. the hotel is definitely making the efforts to put out a good product. the staff are friendly, if a bit inexperienced, and do their best to be helpful. the hotel food is tasty and reasonably priced (the mole tamales for breakfast are rather good) at 25 pesos per person for a mini buffet. however at a price point, one would expect a final product rather than one that is more in the "soft opening" phase.

First off, the top thing to recommend this hotel is the restaurant. The food is exquisite, and the pricing of the menu is very reasonable (you end up paying about $20/plate). As far as I could see, this is the only hotel in Oaxaca that has a decently sized swimming pool, which is reasonably well maintained, and has good service. The hotel is a bit outside the city, but this is easy to deal with, given the hourly shuttle service, and the fact that the city center is about a 20-25 minute walk from the hotel. This being said, because it's outside the city, you get a much bigger room than you would in the city center. One complaint I have is that the internet/wifi was piss poor throughout our stay. If I had had urgent work to do, it would have been nearly impossible.

We really enjoyed our visit at this hotel. The entire staff were genuinely friendly and helpful during our stay and went out of their way to help us getting around Oaxaca. Gustavo our waiter spoke perfect English and gave us many recommendations and insights into the attractions and history of Oaxaca. The design and furnishings of the hotel are quite beautiful with a central bar and rooftop restaurant surrounded by many beautiful flowers and plants. We really enjoyed eating our breakfast there and the food was very good as well.

Absolutely perfect. We were hesitating between azul and casa oaxaca at first and we are so happy we picked hotel azul. Everything about it is way better and more sophisticated than casa oaxaca. Beautiful impeccable design, warm helpful and efficient staff, and great location (in the center but on a pretty quieter street than casa oaxaca). Staying at hotel azul made my trip to oaxaca even more special than it already was!

This was a strange stay. The location was good, near central area, but away from hustle and bustle. Almost none of the staff barely spoke any English, so the communication was difficult. Also, this was a busy weekend, when many other hotels were sold out, but this seemed like the only one that I was the only guest in the entire hotel. Breakfast was additional, so you didn't see anyone eating at the restaurant the whole time I stayed. Considering its luxury set up, there was nothing about this place that screams hospitality.
