Where to stay in Cat Ba Island
Cat Ba Island hotels & accommodations

I read some mixed reviews on this hotel, but was pleasantly surprised by how nice it is. Cat Ba downtown is a little like Myrtle Beach, honky tonk-ish. But this property was by far and away the best in the area, and secluded as well. Rooms, grounds, pool and staff were great. Food also good. Its not a 5 star hotel by world standards, but a 10 star compared to other hot...

I had a fantastic stay at Cat Ba Island Resort and Spa during my second trip to Cat Ba. I first want to say that my girlfriend and I were overjoyed by how we were treated at this resort. Because she is Japanese and I am white, we often experienced rude racism and maltreatment in spite of neither of us being Vietnamese. Regardless, Catba Island Resort made me feel like ...

i was a bit worried when we got to cat ba island and was told i had to catch a boat to the resort, and when we got there was worried there was no way off. but once meet the staff and saw our beautiful bungalow, without a/c (did have fan ) i was hooked. it was the most tranquil place i've been too. the staff were there to help and ensure you stay as comfortable as pos...

The location was the best. It was right in front of the port, which was in the central area & touristic area. Room was big and breakfast buffet was also good, considered the room cost! I and my husband really liked having a pho every morning. Even though it was hard to communicate in English with staffs and bathroom was not super-clean, but there wasn't anything to c...

This place is difficult to get to. All things in life worth doing are like that in my experience. Taxi. plane, hotel in haiphong, taxi, ferry, xe om, boat. That was our journey from hcm. But it really is paradise, in the morning we ordered our food for lunch and evening and the boat went to town and the fish farm. We went back to cat ba island for the morning and MOODY...

we stayed in a bungalow for three nights with amazing views over the ocean from our window. couldn't find a better place on cat ba island. breakfast was a great choice of local and western food buffet with fresh fruit and salad. bungalows are nice, clean and cozy. bathrooms super clean, also public ones. very good location, just five minutes by foot to central passi...

I don't recommend to visit Cat Ba island after Vietnamese's new year. My Hanoi's friend told me, after the new year end, the crime is increasing and the security is not safe after all. Especially for whom planning to have solo trip. The restaurant around the city seems close due to it is not the season when local people visiting. Everything tend to be expensive and no...

We had a great stay here; the room was very tastefully decorated, very clean, and had a brilliant view of the lake. The receptionist was very helpful, and could arrange all sorts of transport and tours (though we didn't avail of this service). It's a max 10 minute walk from the main bustle of the town (centred on the Port), which we liked, as it made the location more ...

I stayed in a mixed dorm for two nights. Clean, comfortable beds, shower and toilet in dorm. The free breakfast was great! Fresh fruit, coffee, juice, and choice of pancakes (with chocolate, banana, or pineapple), pho, banh mi, cereal, toast and eggs, and probably other options I’m forgetting. The hotel is close to the main road, but far enough away to be quiet at nigh...

We are very impressed with this hotel. It is a great service hotel. The room is large beautiful and very comfort. The owner is very nice guy! He is a hard working guy who always welcome his customers with best tries. We really recommend this hotel to everyone who come to visit Cat ba island. The location of the hotel is great, very near to the seafood market and the pier....

This review is about the tours operating from the hotel, not the hotel itself. Even if you stay at any other hotel, we strongly recommend the services of Tony and Geoffrey, a vietnamese/french team offering what you most probably will not get from traditional vietnamese operators (poor diversity, low flexibility) or the better known other office tourist information (m...

Viet Bungalows (also trading as Whisper of Nature/Whispering Nature) is an awesome gem tucked away in a remote part of Cat Ba Island. There are only a handfull of small bungalows, so it is a perfect place to relax and escape the crowds and noise! Staff are friendly, speak good english and are great at organising day trips, local guides and kayak hire. We ate at the ope...

My husband and I used Gieng Ngoc Hotel as our base during our recent visit to Vietnam and were extremely happy with the location, staff, service, breakfast and lodging. All pf the staff were extremely helpful and very attentive to needs and details. The location is in the heart of the Cat Ba Island, so it's easy to walk everywhere. The rooms are extremely clean, and ve...

Our stay at Thao Minh New Star was just what we wanted. A decent hotel at a reasonable price. The staff are polite and friendly and very helpful. The room was modern and well maintained, with wi-fi and cable TV (including some English channels). There was always hot water and the rooms were made up daily, usually accompanied by a nice plate of complimentary fruit. The...

I spent two nights here with my girlfriend. She was sick, she suffered from a bad diarrhoea. The hotel is a bit outside of the crowded city. After the rush hour it's pretty quiet. The owner was absolutely nice and helped us out with local medicine. Also, he prepared a breakfast for me at 5am. He got up, extra for me. So, the service is very good here.
Staffs can arrange for hiring small boating to Monkey Island (VND1mil) excluding island tickets. It is family own business with lift. Okay if you are jus spending a night or so. Ferry back to DunChiau(Halong station) located 30Km north most from here. Another ferry station to Haiphong via CatHai is 15kms west most from here.

The "deluxe" room I got was spacious, but that was just about it's only good attribute. The room was not well maintained. The room phone was not working and all lights except the bathroom light, entryway light, and bedside lamp not working or missing bulbs. The free wifi was only barely accessible from one corner of the room. The laundry service ruined a pair of pants ...

The hotel is nicly situated in the center of cat ba. Next to the harbour and many restaurants. We didnt get towels until we asked. They were quitw dirty and also some hair on the bed sheets. There was no blanket. The room and bathroom were quite small. Very bad water pressure! Breakfast looked okay, but very basic. The staff was very friendly but unfortunatly their Eng...

Good hostel. The staff are really friendly and helpful and have exceptional English. The hostel looks over the bay and is a short walk to some really good nearby restaurants. We booked the Eco Boat tour around Ha Long Bay through the hostel. It was really cheap the the tour was great - Definite must do! Rooms are big and clean, shared bathroom facilities are clean as w...

had a great stay here - very good location right in the middle of cat ba town. close to everything. the staff in the reception spoke ok english and was very keen on helping and explaining things. breakfast buffet was ok - nothing special but better than many other asian hotels.
Cheap places to stay in Cat Ba Island

Good location, free breakfast and lovely reception lady ( or manager, owner maybe). One big minus - room was very damp. We decided to look for another hotel for the next day ( initially we booked just for one), but since the staff was so nice we decided to stay one more night despite the dampness :) Wifi in the rooms so so, usualy you had to stand up and go closer to ...

We booked this hotel because all the other hotels on Cat Ba were fully booked on the weekend we were there. It's relatively expensive for what you get (which is basically nothing). There are much better and cheaper hotels on Cat Ba that can be booked when you arrive. The rooms are dirty, the sheets were dirty and never changed, you only get one towel in the room, ...

The Woodstock Beach Camp is a cool little getaway on Cat Ba Island. It's a bit isolated, which I liked, but you'll need to be pretty proficient with a motorbike to navigate the bumpy gravel roads between there and town, or pay for a taxi. The staff is nice and accommodating, including working around my tricky food allergies (having a Vietnamese allergy card to show the...

A cozy little place. Be advised, it is a few km away from Cat Ba town, but you can rent a scooter there, so not a problem at all. They have a nice restaurant downstairs, and the food is awesome. The couple that runs the establishment is very helpful and accommodating, and the little girl will become your instant friend. Watch out for the attack chihuahua! Just ki...

Great hotel. We had a spectacular room on the 6th floor with a balcony view of the harbor and all the little boats in Cat Ba. No worries about the 6th floor--they have a shiny modern elevator. Excellent value-for-money, best we've had in Vietnam so far. Ba is very (very) friendly, welcoming, and helpful. The place is steps from one of the most popular eateries on the i...

The location was fantastic, as were the staff and facilities. The room had everything we required. The restaurant on the lower level was affordable and delicious. The staff were very helpful and kind. We extended our stay on the island by almost a week and we had no doubt we wanted to continue to book our accommodation with Phuong Phuong hotel.

It is the best place if you want to have a romantic or peaceful vacation. There's only 1 resort at the island, so you'll feel that the island belongs only to you. Kayaks, inflatable rings, pool and KTV are free of charge. The short tracking route will bring you to the other beach without any signs of people. It reminds me of Robinson Crusoe. Restaurant works from 6.3...

For the price, this place really cannot be faulted. For $7 a night, what more can you expect. But just so other travelers are aware, do not come expecting more than a 1 Star. The location is perfect, right in the heart of town. WiFi is not strong, we had to use it in the reception area. Free breakfast included, which considering the price is amazing, however it is not ...

First we booked 3 nights in this Hotel. But we really loved this Location, so we stayed 2 more Nights. The rooms are really big and there are big windows! We loved that there was so much light in the room! The room was really clean also! The breakfast was great! You get breakfast at the rooftop so that you have an amazing view! The staff is so friendly and helpful! We ...

Luna’s is very cute. The roof top restaurant is a great place to just hang out and get something to eat or drink and escape the heat of cat ba. Their smoothies are the best!!! And their food is relatively cheap and tasty. Everyone in the staff was very easy to communicate with. The laundry smelled great. Overall we had an awesome sfay

Definitely recommended for the above mentioned, especially for the rather (local) touristy Cat Ba island. Also has a small fridge stocked with common drinks, along with motorbike rentals and responsive management that spoke rather fluent English, making the stay very convenient. During my stay, there were some bugs in the room, and power was intermittent due to loose...

Located next to the market with partial sea view, visible when door open. When booking please check which room is being booked, since I expected a proper sea view from the room. Did'nt get that. Reception desk is very relaxed and I got the feeling that staff (if they were that) were just tired of guests. It is unusual not to get a smile in Vietnam. The bay is 1 minute ...

This little hotel on the touristy (very touristy!!!) beach strip of Cat Ba island is everything you'd expect from a low budget stay. This little hotel is clean, offers AC and fan (more than I've had in most budget places) and all facilities a traveller needs. The owners are friendly and helpful people who are willing to help you whenever and rent out good quality motor...

For 8$ a night, its a pretty good hotel. The views of the bay and port from the rooms balconies is amazing. The owners are nice and helpful, there are many cheap restaurants around and they even rent scooters for 3,5$ a day. The rooms are quite ok, bathrooms very small but for the price...

To sum up : don't go there, there is better values on the same street and around. Pros : Big enough room for the price with a nice view on the sea. Cons : not really clean. Bed not so confortable. Room dirty, even if i saw worse.. The hot water wasn't working. Took me 2 hours and many journeys between the receptions and the 3rd floor (no lift) to make it understand...

Cat Ba Island was great. Lots of restaurants lining the bay with decent eats and cold beer. Make sure to get outside of town and explore the island.
The nature of Cat Ba island is unquestionable beautiful. However, the "tourism management" need redoing and improving at some points
For the person looking for physical activity along with enjoying the beauty of Halong Bay, this is the way to go.
We really enjoyed our walk to the village and lunch. We also loved that the roads were quiet and hired a scooter for a day (for the first time) and had so much fun with it.
I love this amazing place. Met the nicest people here. Go for a run along the sea, relax at the beach, take a boat to beautiful Halong Bay and do some kayaking, check out the rock climbing, go hiking in the National Park, ride around the mountains on a motorbike, eat incredible Pho, check out Rose Bar at night.
Just don't go. If you do, maybe spend an afternoon here. But I am not sure what you would want to see.
Visit Canon Fort. Since its a small island, don't have to spend many days there, 1 to 2 nights is good enough.
Quiet idylic Island, I would recommend staying a day or two before or after a junk tour of Lan Ha and Ho Long Bay.
Cat Ba is a beautiful island with a national park, stunning islands and a small city. The National Park hosts monkeys which are not found anywhere else and is a well protected zone.
It takes more than 3 hours from Hanoi to Cat Ba. Thus, its worth to stay more than 1 night there to relax.
The island is small and you can walk around and explore the small shops and night market. Beware of the seafood restaurant because they might replace another not quite fresh piece(s) of fish/crab which you thought you have already chosen.
Very beautiful and relatively unspoilt. Though cold, we enjoyed it out of season in February, but understand it is VERY busy in June, July, August.
It's a quiet and unspoiled island, with 3 small beaches, called Beach No1-3. If you want to have a beach holiday, I'm afraid Cat Ba is not the place.
Cat Ba Island is to the south of Halong Bay and we suspect less touristy. There are countless colourful fishing boats moored in the harbour of Cat Ba town and traversing the waters, giving a more authentic feel (as opposed to tourist "junks".
If you like beach and sun is a good place to explore. A lot of seafood restaurant. Life is simple there.
I have been here for 2 times. One time with my friends, one time with my family. They are all great. I felt happy to be here.
Cat Ba is a beautiful island. The best place to go and relax from city life in Hanoi or Haiphong. You're close to nature and there's lots of activities waiting for you if you don't want to stay at the beach.
Cat ba was amazing. We only planned and booked 2 nights but we loved cat ba and duc tuan hotel so much we stayed 8 nights.
Visit Halong Bay for the day, the tour price includes a trip to a cave, kayaking around the bay and lunch.
take an inclusive tour from hanoi to ha long town, thence afternoon and night on a junk include "amazing cave".
Halong Bay is a big attraction of Cat Ba Island, but there is also a big National Park ewhich is worth exploring.
the town is nothing special but the island is great to go on a boat or hire a scooter as almost no traffic.
This island is on the early stage of becoming a tourist place, so things are quite poor. The town is small with a market and a main big street.
The island itself and the islands around the area are well worth a visit, whether it's a day trip around the island, or a day out on the sea.
Impressions from a brief transitory vsit I didn't want to stay there.Rickety boats and one idiotic taxi driver.
